| First Biodegradable Foamboard Announced by The Gilman Brothers Company | | Insite® Biodegradable | Share: | | Posted: 2/28/2009 | | | • Insite® Biodegradable breaks down in landfills • Paper liners are SFI certified
Gilman, CT – The first foamboard engineered with a biodegradable polystyrene foam center has been announced by The Gilman Brothers Company. The flagship product of the company’s “green” initiative, new Insite® Biodegradable is a standard graphics foamboard consisting of a rigid “memory” foam center faced on either side by SFI certified white paper liners.
Exclusive Biodegradable Foam Center The Insite® Biodegradable foam, with 15% recyclable content, is formulated with “bio resins”. These bio resins cause the discarded foamboard to break down in landfills or commercial composters once the foam is exposed to a bacteria rich environment, leaving only a rich biomass compost. The material only requires one to five years for 100% breakdown whereas conventional foamboards will not biodegrade for 80 to 450 years.
According to Cyrus Gilman, Vice President of The Gilman Brothers Company, “there is no trade-off between the positive environmental attributes of the product and the physical performance of the new foamboard. The breakdown of new Insite® Biodegradable foamboard will not begin until it is discarded in a landfill.”
The Insite® Biodegradable foamboard looks and feels the same as standard Insite® Reveal®. It offers a rigid foam center composed of very fine cells, providing an ultra-smooth printing and mounting surface, along with clean cutting and converting characteristics.
SFI Approved Paper Liners In addition to the biodegradable foam center, Insite® Biodegradable is faced with smooth, bright white paper liners formulated from wood products certified by the Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI), the largest forestry products certification program in North America.
BACKGROUND The Gilman Brothers Company is a premier manufacturer of foamboard products for signage, display and graphics. Founded in 1897, the company has been instrumental in developing and bringing to market innovative products for the changing needs of the visual industries.
